Task Force 2(TF2)-Nurturing Future Generations

This page gives an introduction to TF2 in the Malaysian Triennium.

Malaysia assumes the Presidency of IGU from 2009-2012 and will host the 25th World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur from 4-8 June 2012 in Kuala Lumpur.  In line with the Strategic Guidelines developed under the Malaysian Presidency, one of the key concerns relates to “ensuring adequate human capacity to enable growth and integrity of the industry”.

Strategic Guidelines of the Malaysian Triennium

1) Enhancing the role of gas for sustainable development and balancing the needs of all stakeholders.

2) Improving availability of gas and access to markets.

3) Maximising efficiency throughout the expanding gas value chain.

4) Ensuring adequate human capability to enable growth and integrity of the industry.

To address this specific issue on human resources, two Special Projects have been initiated by the Malaysian Presidency.  These are:
1) Building Strategic Human Capital
2) Nurturing the Future Generations

The first project (TF1) aims at understanding the key issues impacting the attraction and retention of talent in the gas industry and to develop a strategic approach to human capacity building and provide guidance to the industry in recruiting, retaining and developing capable workforce at the right time and place for the future sustainability and integrity of the gas industry.

The second project (TF2) looks at a longer term perspective and is aimed at developing a comprehensive approach to nurture the future generations towards an interest in science and technology and eventually direct them towards the oil and gas industry.  The project team will also implement specific programmes to address the youth during the 2009-2012 triennium and the World Gas Conference.

SCOPE

A. PROMOTING THE INTEREST OF YOUTH IN S & T (An industry approach) - To collect data on their best practices (the global Oil and Gas industry and Governments’) across all age groups and to develop a comprehensive approach (‘Blueprint’) for impactful outcomes that can be conducted/adopted by the industry.

B. SPECIFIC YOUTH PROGRAMME DURING THE TRIENNIUM - To implement specific programmes on the gas industry to address the needs of the youth (below age 30) during the 2009-2012 triennium.

C. PARTICIPATION OF YOUTH AT WGC 2012- To provide a platform for the youth where they could share their views, hopes and aspirations related to the Gas industry. At the 2012 World Gas Conference, TF2 will also invite representatives of Youth to a Carnival of S & T in Kuala Lumpur. It is possible that Youth may make a proclamation at the Carnival of their vision for sustainable energy for the 21st century and beyond.

DELIVERABLES

1. Report on the survey and approach to attract youth to the industry
2. Publication/toolkit on “Understanding the Gas Industry”
3. Compilation of the best practices adopted by the industry/companies
4. A comprehensive approach (blueprint) that can be adopted by the industry for impactful results
5. Round-table forum during WGC 2012
6. Specific regional programmes/activities with the Youths
7. S & T Carnival for the Youths during WGC 2012

IGU Task Force 2 (TF 2) has developed a website called ‘ITSNOTMAGICITSSCIENCE’. The website has information on subjects related to Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and education
