Palermo & Recoleta (3 hours)

Come and join us to discover the northern neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires where our “Aristocracy” from the XIX Century had their own private palaces.

Be amazed by how similar this area is to a European capital, and understand why the upper classes in Buenos Aires loved this part of the city. Find out how Buenos Aires was transformed during the “Belle Époque” into the “Paris of South America”.

We will also visit the neighbourhood of Palermo with its low-rise colonial houses, designer bars and ethnic restaurants. Discover how it has been divided from “Palermo Viejo” (Old Palermo) into “Palermo Soho” and “Palermo Hollywood”.

We will visit San Martin square, Alvear Avenue and Palermo.

Buenos Aires Architecture

Buenos Aires holds a valuable, striking and suggestive architectural heritage. Inspired by international patterns and combined with the local tendency of free reinterpretation, the architectural scenery of Buenos Aires results in a wide and eclectic building legacy.

This tour highlights the most outstanding features focusing on the descriptions and how they are related to the city’s social and political history.

The sites to be visited are: Avenida de Mayo (seeing, amongst other buildings, the former headquarters of La Prensa newspaper, café Tortoni, Barolo palace, Chile hotel, former headquarters of Crítica newspaper, National Congress).
We visit Belgrano Avenue to see some highlights of our patrimony (including the Otto Wulf building and Santo Domingo Church), and we finally enter the post-modern and controversial area of Puerto Madero, seeing the buildings by some of the most important international architectural celebrities, such as Calatrava, Pelli, Foster and Viñoly.

Important note: although the tour focuses on façades, we always enter some of the buildings to see distinctive features (La Prensa building, Barolo palace). We also walk across the Calatrava Bridge.

We go to the old land of the gauchos in the ancient frontier with the indigenous tribes: the area of San Antonio de Areco, a tiny colonial town that has majestic buildings from the early 20th century, when Argentina’s economy was booming.

We visit some of the well-known artisans (leather, silver, textiles) of Areco, who show us round their workshops and how they make their crafts. Another option is a visit to the Gaucho museum which holds an interesting collection on the Pampas' history.

Then we have a traditional asado (Argentine BBQ) lunch at one of the exclusive estancias of the area, where we spend the rest of the day walking in the beautiful gardens, riding horses, participating in rural activities or bird-watching.

Before going back to Buenos Aires, we have tea, coffee or traditional mate, with homemade cakes and typical Argentine pastries.

Price per person: USD 165.  Minimum 20 persons.

We visit the Quinta Pueyrredón, one of the best examples of 19th century estates still standing, and the popular market “Puerto de Frutos”.
