Scope and Purposes
Because natural gas is clean, abundant, flexible and economic, all relevant forecasts produced by accredited international organisations are unanimous to point out the key role that it will continue to play in the future.
Indeed, a large number of conventional and unconventional reserves can be readily developed in several regions of the globe, a fact that highlights the strong sense of security of supply prevailing today in the industry.
Nevertheless, the exploratory success and the economical feasibility of the new production projects still face important challenges from both technical and environmental standpoints.
As an example, the industry will have to adapt itself to new standards of product quality, safety requirements and environmental restrictions, with much tougher controls for CO2 emissions and disposal of residues. In addition to that, higher production costs can be expected as the new exploratory areas will be more difficult to develop than the previous ones.
In the current IGU triennium, WOC 1 will focus on technological advances for the exploration and production of natural gas, on the assessment of conventional and unconventional reserves and resources, and on the analysis of policies for mineral property rights and gas rent, having set up three study groups accordingly.
Study groups
SG 1.1 Technological advances in natural gas E&P
SG 1.2 Assessment of global reserves and resources
SG 1.3 Natural gas rent and mineral property rights
